How to Choose the Ideal Pair of Wedding Shoes

There are a few factors to take note when choosing a pair of wedding shoes. Your partner and your height, the style and colour of your wedding gown, length of your gown and how comfortable you are wearing heels.

Heels, how high?

Higher heels will make your legs look more slender and toned (keeping your calves flexed), and they'll also ensure better posture.

Shorter brides are always tempted to go for higher heels to give them height. However if you do not wear high heels regularly, you may end up with sore feet and ruin your special day. Remember the shoes will need to be comfortable enough to be worn for the whole day.

Alternatively, it would be a good idea to start training walking with high heels before your big day.

If you have a long wedding dress, you can consider wedge platform style shoes, since the shoes will be concealed under the long dress.

Ultimately, you should consider heel height which you are comfortable with.

Bridal Shoes Colour

The traditional colour for wedding is ivory and white so the obvious choice is to choose the shoe colour that matches your gown. Silver is an easy colour to match so most brides would choose silver shoes as it complements their evening gown too

Lately there is a growing trend of brides becoming more adventurous and going for bolder colours like gold, rose red and apple green just to add their own unique flavour and really stand out on their big day. Bolder colours can be worn to match the wedding theme or bring out the subtle colour on the gown.

If possible bring a along fabric swatches of your gown. If you need to take a photo, be sure to take it under white or natural lights. Most bridal studio have yellow spot lights and any colour under yellow light will turn out to be misleading.

Type of gown

If your gown has elaborate details such as embroidery or beading, go for simple looking bridal shoes. The focus should be on your gown and you do not want the bridal shoes to take away that focus.

If you have a simple dress, more fancy looking shoes can really enhance and give the overall elegant look. Bridal shoes can be ornamented with embellishments such as crystals, rhinestone, bows, beading, and embroidery

Covered or open-toe

Covered wedding shoes give a more formal look and would be more suitable for church ceremonies or a grand wedding dinner.

Open toe wedding shoes are good for brides who want to show off their pedicure which is the rage nowadays. Open toe wedding shoes would be more suitable for hot tropical country like Singapore, especially for outdoor or garden weddings.

For those who are undecided, go for peep-toe shoes. You get the best of both worlds.

Wedding Shoe Trivia - Part 2: 'SHOwErs' of blessings

In Anglo Saxon times, the groom would symbolically tap the bride's forehead with the heel of the bride's shoe to show his authority over her. The brides tossed one of her shoes rather than bouquets to bridesmaids who hoped to be the next to marry.

According to an alternative Turkish wedding culture, all the bride's single girlfriends will sign the soles of her wedding shoes. It is said that the person whose name fades the most after the shoes have made their way down the aisle and seen their time on the dance floor will be the next to get married.

During Tudor times, guests would throw shoes at the newlywed couple. O-U-C-H! If they or their carriage were hit, it meant good luck was bestowed upon them!The tradition of tying shoes to the back of the couple's car. Now, thankfully, folks just tie shoes to the new couple's car.

Aren't we glad that some customs evolved with time. :)

Less well known is for the bride's father to give the groom a pair of the bride's shoes to symbolise the passing of responsibility for the daughter to her new husband.

There're many interesting rituals regarding wedding shoes.

Have you heard of the verse "something old, something new"?

The full text of the verse goes like this:

Something borrowed, something blue,
And silver sixpence in your shoe.

Try tucking some coins in your wedding shoe, it is believed to bring you wealth in your married life and protection against wants.

During the Wedding Diary Asia exhibition, we met a few loving moms who'd like to order our bridal shoes for their daughters who were currently based abroad. A very touching gesture to me.

This is the kind of bonding that is unique to mother-daughter relationship. We knew each others' sizes, tastes and styles and some of us may even share our wardrobe of shoes and clothes. But the moms will probably be more familiar with the daughters' than vice versa.

I may also do the same for my lil' darling when she get married. But that will be many many years down the road. :)

Darcy Miller, the editorial director of Martha Stewart Weddings, shows us how to make wine-bottle labels, a very popular trend in weddings.

Tools and Materials
1.Design and print wine bottle label (approximately 2 3/4" wide by 5 3/4" high)
2.Remove label of wine bottle; soak in warm water, scrape with razor blade, and clean up with Goo Gone.
3.Print template on heavyweight paper.
4.Cut out on the outside of the black line.
5.Run through Xyron machine with permanent adhesive cartridge and stick to bottle or use double-sided tape and attach to bottle.

White wedding: Choosing the right shade of white

White is the traditional color of bridal dress in both western (European) and Japanese weddings. The ancient Greek started the tradition of white at wedding, which they saw as the bridal symbol of joy and celebration (1). In Japan, the bride wears a pure white kimono known as shiromuku which symbolizes purity as well as a new beginning as the bride is reborn a member of her husband's family (2).
Anne of Brittany wore a white wedding dress or her marriage to Louis XII of France in 1499. But up until the late 19th century, brides wore just about any color for their wedding gown (3).

In 1840, Queen Victoria wore white for her wedding to Prince Albert and started the fashion for wearing white.

Today, a white wedding gown is a MUST have for all weddings. But there are more than 200 shades of white around. How do do pick the right shade of white? Here're some suggestions to help you choose one that complements your skin tone:

For your gown

If you're fair-skinned, look for ivory shades containing yellow undertones.
If you have a pinker complexion, choose creamy undertones.
If you have olive, yellow-based, or dark skin, select champagne or off-white shades.

For your bridal shoes

Ivory dresses tend to go well with gold shades and ivory shoes. You can consider Champagne Belle, Ivory Sophie, Yvette and Jodie.

Shoe and Bag Care Tip

Waterproofing and satinproofing

The first time the shoes/bags were removed from the box/cover bag, spray them with the stain guard protector. Spraying regularly will keep them in tip-top condition. Remember to cover any embellishments such as metal and beading when spraying the protector.

To get the best out of your satin shoe collection, we recommend storing them in their cover bag and then in their box for longevity. For the satin evening bags, store them in the cover bag.

To get rid of dirt on your satin bag or shoes,

1. Apply a bit of soap and water, and pressure from fingernail, to clean off the tips that were a bit dirty.
2. Use a washcloth and dab the entire bag/shoe surface to make it evenly wet. (please note: not soaked)
3. Stuff dry wash cloths into the shoe/bag to make sure they retained their shape.
4. Tightly wrapped the shoe/bag in several layers of paper kitchen towels5. Left them to dry.

Extra: To make sure the shine stays on, smooth the satin bag/shoe with a sponge dipped in lukewarm water with a splash of white wine vinegar in it and rub with the weave. It has an additional advantage of killing any odours. Allow to dry and air.

Faulty Item / Wrong item
